First, make sure you’re in a quiet room free of distractions. Everything can affect the taste of wine, so make sure there are no loud noises or crowds around you. Smells can also alter the taste of the wine, so make sure there are no strong cooking or perfume smells wafting into your space.

Second, give your wine a good swirl. This allows some oxygen into the wine and releases its natural aromas. Give it a series of quick, short sniffs. These steps will help you evaluate the wine by sight and smell, allow you to identify what kind of wine it is, and potentially predict what it will taste like.
